Ever read interviews with writers and cartoonists and they say something like, “My characters tell me what they’ll say. I try to write dialog for them and they’ll tell me that they’d never say that.” It always sounds like B.S. doesn’t it?
Well, now it’s happened to me. Take a look at Bomb’s dialog in the last panel. I’ll tell you this… I hate it.
If you’ve read this strip for any period of time, you know that I’m a big Peanuts fan, and I have been since I was a kid. So I thought it would be funny to use the “auuuggghhh” that Charlie Brown would yell when he missed kicking the football. And as I wrote this episode, Bomb’s line just popped into my head. And I hated it. It just sounded disrespectful to me. Ugh.
So I tried to change it. But the problem is… it’s what Bomb would say. It’s like she wouldn’t let me put other words into her mouth.
So here we are with an episode I’m ambivalent about. I debated about killing the whole sequence, but the problem is, it seemed to work.
So what do you think? Does this work? Does doing this make me less of a Peanuts fan? Am I being too sensitive about the whole thing?
