T-Bone is loosely based on my dog, Buddy. He’s a blind, indoor dog now, but when he was younger he stayed in the back yard and killed anything unlucky or stupid enough to wander through the yard at night.
Every few weeks during the spring and summer, I’d get up in the morning and find a dead possum or raccoon out back. Usually Buddy would be standing over it panting as if to say, “See what I did? I got another one!” I stopped counting at twenty. Clearly he took the idea of protecting the property and family very seriously.
As I said, he’s now old, blind and lives indoors. But he’s still a good dog.

AFTER THE FACT:
I knew from the beginning that I wanted to use Rooster for the more surreal gags. What I quickly realized is that he would need a “straight man” of sorts. And Ryan fits the bill nicely.
And I know perfectly well that I’m not the first cartoonist to get some mileage out of snowmen.
